Objective: Resolve drainage issues in back yard. Create high impact, functional lawn areas as well as ornamental bed spaces that customer to plant over time. Select “bones” of landscape – plants that will become the focal points of the back yard. Construct raised beds next to deck so that ornamental plantings are enjoyed from both deck as well as lower back yard.

Solution: Underground trenching of downspouts to eliminate continued erosion problems. We connected individual drain lines together into one primary line and released it at the mouth of a dry creek bed. For specimen plants, we selected a weeping Japanese Maple, a Blue Atlas Cedar, and a River Birch, as this client loves the peeling bark of this tree. We also installed two groups of evergreens on each fence line to begin establishing a sense of space. Our raised beds are constructed of pressure treated timbers and topdressed with nutrient-rich planting soil – ready to be planted! Our steps into the lower back yard were constructed using Craborchard flagstone step treads. This provides a nice transition from the deck down to the yard while also complimenting the rocks in the dry creek bed.

Objective: To create a visually appealing front landscape. Customer requested that her yard provide some kind of interest year round. Resolve standing water on front left corner of house near basement stairs after a rain event.

Solution: Use of different leaf textures, colors, and flower bloom times to create year round seasonal interest. We also removed the concrete sidewalk on both sides of the house, regraded, and installed large flagstone pieces and a dwarf ground cover that complimented the new foundation plantings. French drain was installed on the left corner of the house to eliminate standing water, and downspouts were trenched underground to a new drain box located in a low spot in the yard.

Objective: Customer wanted an organized, clean, aesthetically pleasing front yard. Another goal was to create a low maintenance, sustainable landscape through the reuse of existing plant material combined with complimenting new material.

Solution: Addition of a small lawn space by using low maintenance bermudagrass as well as relocation of many existing plants. We also created a flagstone walkway with a dwarf groundcover planted in the seams to function as a walkway from the front sidewalk to the front door. We also created a swale on the right front side of the house to channel surface water away from the house foundation.

Objective: This customer wanted a clean and simple landscape with year round interest. Ivy had overtaken the yard and they wanted to reclaim it as well as to give their corner lot some curb appeal.

Solution: The first thing we did was remove all of the ivy. Next, we heavily pruned the mature Crape myrtles, Chinese snowball bush, and the holly hedge, all of which were overgrown. Because the customer wanted to keep it simple, the only stonework we incorporated was granite edging with mortared seams. This was an easy way to separate bed space from lawn space. We also combined blue and white flowering plants such as Annabelle hydrangeas, Encore Azaleas, and a Serviceberry tree with chartreuse-leaved plants such as hosta and variegated sweetflag.

Objective: Customer wanted to reclaim front and side yards. Needed a space for small children to run around, and also wanted a simple sitting area to be able to use antique lawn furniture. Also, the side yard was overgrown and inaccessible as well as consistently wet due to AC units and downspouts draining. Pedestrian access into the back yard was needed and water problem needed to be resolved.

Solution: Pruning to elevate the large Magnolia tree to allow for more sunlight, removal of all of the ivy, regrading, and sod installation. Also, heavy pruning of the side yard and removal of wild vegetation, regrading to create a swale for surface water, and setting of 18"x18" flagstone steppers to create walkway from driveway to back yard. A small retaining wall was constructed along with 18"x36" steps leading into back yard. Lastly, shade loving plants including Autumn ferns, hydrangea, hosta, and fragrant tea olive were installed to create color and fragrance.
